Nov 29, 2015 · This time of year I love doing a little Fall Thematic unit! I feel like I have to teach about fall here in the Sunshine State. Mainly because there really isn’t a Fall season. Unfortunately, the palm trees don’t really loose their leaves and animals head our way for winter… so teaching about this “abstract” idea is a must!

As I read I pointed out that the students all started off with the prompt, In the fall, and wrote the main idea, then they used the detail to write sentences about what happens in the fall. When I finished reading I explained that today they were to use their Topic, Main Idea, Detail graphic organizer to write a summary about their favorite season.
Now that your student knows how to pull main ideas and supporting details when reading, see if the student can create his own main ideas and supporting details for writing. Have the student create a word web with the main idea in a bubble in the middle of the page. The main idea in a paragraph is the most important idea. It is the central point that an author is trying to get across to the reader. The supporting details describe the main idea. They make the main idea stronger and clearer. Keep in mind that the main idea is often the first or last sentence of a paragraph.
